THESIS ON THE PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY IX, 1940 ︎ WALTER BENJAMIN
“A Klee painting named ‘Angelus Novus’ shows an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he is fixedly contemplating. His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing in from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such a violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.”

<description>Fragments of You and MePUBLIC ART
Two empty plinths, cast from concrete mixed with collected plastic litter, and three plaques in Mississauga’s J. C. Saddington Park address the complexities of our collective relationship with plastic. The plinths function as “plausible objects”: things which the plaques could plausibly seem to refer to, although what the plaques actually refer to is the invisible network of production, consumption, and disposal of plastic. The plaques follow public information design standards for parks and historic sites in Canada, but are written as though by a municipal authority from an alternate timeline where plastic is no longer the problem it once was.

1. WHAT IS THIS?
Some ten billion tons — or ten trillion kilograms (10,000,000,000,000 kg) — of plastic have been manufactured so far, at a rate that increases every year. In this decade, we have produced nearly a billion tons of plastic every two years. It is difficult to even imagine what that number means. More difficult still to consider the fact that of those ten billion tons, less than 10% has ever been recycled. The remainder is simply — out there, circulating in even the most seemingly pristine environments you will ever encounter on this planet. We imagine that in such a world — where even the ground beneath your feet consists of buried plastic — plastic waste will begin to be used by its citizens as a building material, like in the pedestal you see before you. This plaque assumes you are a citizen from a future beyond even that time, where the problem of plastic has been dealt with, and where its horrors remain only a historical memory.

2. WHAT IS TO BE DONE?
You know, of course, to dispose of your own plastic waste carefully. But what has led to plastic’s widespread availability, and why is its disposal so difficult? Plastic is a petrochemical, and its production and disposal heavily influenced by corporate interests in government, especially in a country as closely tied to the petrochemical industry as the one we live in.Not only has the vast production of plastic been made to seem normal — Coca-Cola has increased its production of plastic by millions of kilograms every year — but the disposal or recycling of this plastic has been made to seem our individual task. Never mind that it is hardly possible for an individual to collect the kind of machinery and chemicals required to construct a single-purpose bottle-recycling plant in their backyard to recycle a bottle of Coca-Cola, or for even a municipality to build a plant capable of handling all of the thousands of varied products we all use. Not only have corporations denied responsibility for the afterlife of their products once they have accepted your money, they have also lobbied government to prevent them from being given any such responsibility. Instead, they have poured funding into “greenwashing” — expensive advertising claiming large-scale environmental victories on the basis of small-scale unfulfilled promises. We must hold our political representatives to account for their close relationships with corporations that do not have our, our environment, or this country’s interests in mind. Imperial Oil, for example, which has lobbied government to prevent plastic being labeled as “toxic”, is owned by the American company Exxon, whose largest shareholders are “asset-management” corporations, and which is the successor to the 19th-century illegal monopoly Standard Oil. No corporate actions by it or its subsidiaries since then have suggested a turn away from the same kind of business.
Things need not remain the same. A recent law has effectively banned “greenwashing”, and oil companies have begun to take down advertisements and websites claiming their so-called environmental successes.* The next steps would be to increase corporate responsibility for recycling their own products, and to begin reducing the production of new plastics altogether. It starts by seeing the problem of plastic for what it truly is — your problem — a problem of selecting the correct waste bin, but also of selecting the correct box on an election ballot.*Austen, Ian. 3. IS IT COMPLICATED?
In a word, yes. The problem of plastic is incredibly complicated. This is partly due to the fact that the production of plastic is itself so long and complicated. Set aside the contents of your bottle of water for now; consider the bottle itself. The production of that plastic required, at its likely origin in this country, the complete destruction of wetland habitats and boreal forests along the Athabasca River in Northern Alberta. The extraction process there uses the fresh river water, and has left behind more than a trillion litres of “tailings”, which are ponds of the deadly chemical byproduct. There is enough to cover the entire lake you see before you, from Mississauga to Niagara, and from Hamilton to Kingston, in an oily crud half-a-foot deep. In Alberta, these ponds have also been leaking into the groundwater supplying communities in the region. Of course, this also means that the freshwater of the Athabasca River is no longer usable, a fact that underscores the absurdity of it being used to merely bottle freshwater collected elsewhere.
Once processed, the raw material is transported mainly by pipelines —  crossing and threathening communities, forests, rivers, lakes and habitats — from Northern Alberta all the way to Sarnia, Ontario, whose refineries make it home to 10% of all industrial air pollution in the entire province. Refineries in Sarnia produce so much air pollution that some have been granted exemptions from legal pollution limits by the province. The plastic raw material produced by these refineries is then transported by rail or road to a bottling plant, such as Nestlé’s plant in Aberfoyle, about 45 minutes’ drive from here.&#38;nbsp;
The water itself is extracted in the town of Erin, about 30 minutes’ drive west of Brampton. Here, Nestlé has an agreement to pay the province $503.71 per&#38;nbsp;million litres of water, which works out to nearly 2,000 litres of water per dollar.* Unsurprisingly, local communities have no access to clean drinking water, and similar communities have not had access to clean drinking water for decades — in a country home to 60% of the world’s lakes and 20% of the world’s freshwater. Residents must drive to nearby Caledonia, to purchase their own clean water, now bottled by Nestlé and on sale for about 2 litres per dollar — a thousand times more than Nestlé paid for it.
The bottled water is also transported from the bottling plant to your local supermarket, where you purchase it, and having consumed it, wish to dispose of the plastic responsibly. Unfortunately, Nestlé has refused any responsibility for it’s product past this point, and the province or municipality must develop the collection protocols, transportation network, and recycling technologies necessary. The kind of plastic used in the most common kinds of disposable water bottle is polyethylene terephthalate or PET; you’ll have noticed an expiration date printed on these bottles; that expiration date is not of the water inside, but the date by when enough of the slowly decaying plastic container has leached into it that it is no longer recommended to drink it. These must not be reused, and can also only be recycled once or twice before they fall apart entirely into microplastics (as you can also tell by how flimsy the material is).
You have been persudaded by packaging — both literal and metaphorical — that bottled water is a product safely, easily, and cheaply† contained within its transparent plastic shell. However, a bottle of water is also a way of looking at the world — as a simple and uncomplicated place, without the relationships we have with each other and our environment. Packaging permits a bottle of water to masquerade as a singular product when it is in fact a waypoint along the long pipeline of extraction, a not-so-secret trans-continental violence against each other and the environment during which as little compensation as possible can be provided. Yes, you can and should throw your empty bottle in the blue bin, but in a complicated world, complicated problems require dealing with all of their complications.

︎ INDEFINITELY POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19
The Malcove Gallery at the Art Museum of the University of Toronto is the museum’s only cabineted climate-controlled gallery, and, since 1985, has been home to an eclectic collection of mostly early Christian and Byzantine artifacts dating between the 1st and 11th centuries CE. Since then, the museum has federated with other institutions and developed a mandate for contemporary art at odds with the Malcove. The gallery’s use is, however, legally dicated. This project attempts to enable the artifacts themselves to speak to contemporary concerns about museums by placing them in conversation with other artworks from the collection.

EXCERPT&#38;nbsp;︎

Slide 99: The
crisis that we thought was always coming up, always just about to happen, all
of those crises are already happening. They have already happened. The
apocalypse is already here. It’s just unevenly distributed. And now we have to
scrabble in the pile of debris that was produced by this storm that we had been
calling progress, to make something, anything, out of what we have left.

		<description>Talking Trash: Conversation Piece
The imminent apocalypse of trash is in fact already here — just that it is occurring elsewhere. Once we accept its arrival, we can begin rebuilding, reconstructing, rescuing, recycling, and resurrecting this waste into other forms. Locally collected trash was assembled into these functional imitations of iconic pieces of modernist furniture.

This night-time “curatorial tour” of Toronto’s Don Valley Ravine proposed seeing the river and the ravine as artworks, making it possible to see and analyse the hidden flows of material and meaning into and out of the city.

EXCERPT&#38;nbsp;︎
In the old days before measurement, deer roamed the valley, lowered their necks to speak to the waters, waters that still remember them, that nourish plants that resemble them. The City, meanwhile, has allegiances to faraway places, fantasies from across the ocean — plants from other climes, that remember things these waters have never known. &#38;nbsp;

Subsumed into the city, the river is now one among many riverine flows into and out of the city — goods, oil, traffic, people, information, and money. And thus is made available to contradictory movements that counterbalance and combine outside the realm of vision. The City becomes a dominant theme in politics, although it is no longer a field of recognizable operations. Beneath the idea that is The City, powers that have no readable identity multiply; without clear silhouettes, without rational sightlines, they are impossible to administer.

[...] Equality and freedom have to be imposed by the revolt of the excluded, yes, but also reconstructed by citizens in a process that has no end. Meanings do not pre-exist in stories or things but are created in the everyday situations in which they are told or seen. You think of oral traditions as social activities rather than as concrete products. You start to see stories as parts of the tools of living rather than as a set of meanings embedded within things and waiting to be discovered. The city you think you live in seems to reflect above all, what it values — which is value itself. But this is only a story. To remake the city, you need only retell the stories.

In Toronto’s Queen’s Park is a seemingly unremarkable statue of Edward VII. This project tells the strange and tragic true story of its making, its installation, its life, its removal, its journey across oceans, and its bleak afterlife.

<description>Survivors Are Not Heroes / Broken BicycleCOMMISSIONED WRITINGThis poem was commissioned for an ArtworxTO 2021–2022 City of Toronto Year of Public Art guided audio tour of two major artworks on the University of Toronto’s St. George campus.

	︎
From this point of view, you should have Hart House on your right
A bank of trees on your left and up ahead, Soldier’s Tower in sight
The tall bronze sculpture nearest to you is from 1967
Walk up to it, it looks like an upside-down question
A heavy, circular wheel-like base with sun-like rays
Then the dense links and horizontal slash that raise
Off-centre, a tall and slender final pillar
But it doesn’t seem to come together into a picture
All of these parts must mean something
We are usually trusting, unsuspectingThe sculpture you are looking at is called
“Survivors Are Not Heroes” by Sorel Etrog
From 1967, a year of war and anti-war positions
The year Muhammad Ali stood by his convictions
In Canada, it was the year of the enormous 1967 parades
When cities across the country were host to military brigades
The moment a conflict is decided to be “complete”
A monument-building frenzy takes over the streets
What do we think a monument performs exactly? It memorializes the dead, but what is that specifically?
When the story of a conflict is transmuted into bronze, marble, or stone,
People made into names, histories into myths not entirely their own,
A monument, in the present, can make past conflicts legendary
Survivors become heroes, and sacrifices become necessary
Real life — whatever that means — is never so simplistic
And whether your medium is expressive or journalistic
Reality rarely comes together into a comprehensible picture
It is almost always a shimmering mirror, always richerA memorial in familiar style is Soldier’s Tower up ahead in view
Engraved with the names of over a thousand students who died in Wars 1 and 2
In the corners of Queen’s Park far behind you are four war monuments
One of them reads “swords of sacrifice” above a list of colonial “engagements”
Do these monuments describe the long confusion of loss that is human
Or proclaim a simple conclusion, convenient resolution, civic absolution?
Now on your left and through the trees is another
Monument, this one a relief-sculpture
On the far wall of the building that looks like an observatory
It’s the student union building, and this artwork is not an allegory
A broken bicycle pressed by a large tire tread
Discarded sandals on black, an image of dread
Occasionally you may see flowers, messages, or a ribbon
The tread is from a tank; this monument is not military but civilian
The plaque provides a date: June 4, 1989, also known as the 35th of MayStill commemorated every year, as you can see by the bouquet
Marking the loss of parent, sibling, friend, lover, citizen, person, and asking you to care
About the protests across China remembered as the Massacre at Tiananmen Square
Through overwhelming military action against civiliansSomewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand quote disappearances
Titled Broken Bicycle Tiananmen Square by Gu Xiu Hei and Bruce Parsons
And installed on the student union building because it is sovereign
A “politically sensitive" matter that could be taboo for the university
Depending on who you ask, from either nervousness or complicity
In China, survivors and supporters are necessarily invisible
In the “democratic” West their heroism is unequivocal
Sometimes survivors are heroes we want to say
And perhaps they are, heavy though that responsibility may weighWhether you see heroes, survivors, both or neither
Whether you see a monument to a soldier or a teacher
Whether you imagine this is a question with no answer
Or just hampered by language, limited by grammar
We require simplifying, memorializing
To dress the raw with meaningA monument is not resolution, only desired vision
It marks a story incomplete, yet possible, being writtenHere is a poem from the 8th century
By Meng Haoran of the Tang dynasty
While worldly matters have their go
Ancient, modern, to and fro,
Rivers and mountains glorious, unchanging
Still to be witnessed along this heading
Where a fishing boat passes by a falling stream
Where the air grows colder, deep in the ravine
The monument of Yang remains
And we have wept, reading the words

<description>Learning to Write About Architecture from Dr. Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham JailGUEST LECTURE IN 3RD-YEAR UNDERGRADUATE COURSE ON ARCHITECTURAL HISTORYConceived in a year of crisis and the Black Lives Matter protests, this lecture was a close study of Dr. King’s letter as a form of academically and morally persuasive writing. Additional subjects of analysis were course syllabuses for other architecture courses at the university.
